Flaking and Dandruff Causes and Cures
Afraid to wear a black blouse? You're not alone -- sooner or later almost everyone experiences at least a little flaking, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have dandruff. There are several things that can cause flaking that, technically speaking, aren't dandruff.
Buildup: Heavy conditioners and many styling products are made to stick to your hair and can prevent the natural shedding of skin. Use a clarifying shampoo to rid yourself of buildup, and be sure to rinse very thoroughly every time you wash and condition. Keep very oily or greasy products away from your scalp.

Dry scalp: This is a pretty common occurrence, especially in winter. When you wash your hair, use a mild shampoo and give yourself a scalp massage to loosen flakes. Resist the temptation to overcondition, which can cause buildup, but give yourself an occasional deep conditioning if necessary.

Sensitivity: Your scalp might be reacting to harsh ingredients in shampoo; try using a gentler product.

I've had a baby recently and I've noticed my hair has changed dramatically. Help!
Personal Hair Advisor: First, don't panic. With a new baby to care for, hair problems are probably the last thing on your mind. But as your body shifts from no longer being pregnant, the lusher, fuller feeling of your hair can be expected to change. But, take heart. On average, women lose 50 to 80 hairs a day when they're not pregnant. The loss you're experiencing is part of of your body's natural post-pregnancy rhythm.
That hair loss is completely natural and normal, and your hair will grow back. When you're pregnant, however, your body creates different hormones and shuts down others. The result is that your fingernails grow quickly and you don't lose any hair, so it feels very thick. After you give birth you will quickly lose all of that excess hair. In essence, you're losing the same amount of hair as if you weren't pregnant, you're just losing it much, much faster.

Usually the hair loss will start about two months after you have the baby and continue for up to two months before stabilizing. There's no miracle potion when it comes to making your hair grow faster, but there are some things you can do to stimulate growth. The first is to give yourself frequent scalp massages, which will stimulate the blood flow to the scalp and thus help accelerate hair growth.

Many women have found that using a stimulating essential oil on the scalp, such as eucalyptus, also helps, but be sure to check with your doctor before beginning an essential oil program, since they can be very potent. Finally, if the problem persists for more than two months, I recommend seeing a dermatologist, who may be able to prescribe a treatment to help stop hair loss and start new growth.
